Project Update: Permit Approved on Sunnyvale Civic Center
The Sunnyvale Civic Center, located in the heart of Silicon Valley houses the City’s primary administrative facilities including a new City Hall that will be adjacent to the future Sunnyvale Public Library, and Emergency Operations Center. The City of Sunnyvale is in the early stages of a multi-phased plan with the first phase focused on: building two new facilities, increasing open space and native landscape, creating a centralized pedestrian/bike/vehicular connecting plaza crossing the adjacent road, reducing the road width, adding bike lanes and relocating existing site parking underground. Led by SmithGroup, Sherwood Design Engineers provided civil engineering services for road improvements, grading and drainage, public utilities, and an integrated stormwater management retention system which directly supports the many existing redwood, pine and oak trees being preserved throughout. Through Sherwood’s close collaboration and communication with the design team, SmithGroup, PAE Engineers, and KPFF Consulting Engineers, the challenges of this site were converted to opportunities that will contribute towards achieving a LEED Platinum City Hall and LEED Platinum-equivalent Emergency Operations Center. Recently, our team has successfully received our grading and building permits with the City of Sunnyvale. The Sunnyvale Civic Center is estimated to be completed by 2023.
