Alley Pond Environmental Center

Sherwood completed the site civil engineering, flood protection, and landscape integrated stormwater design documentation for the reconstruction of the Alley Pond Environmental Center in Alley Pond Park at the mouth of Alley Creek. This public facility on NYC Department of Parks and Recreation property is a rare and critical resource for the New York City youth to learn and engage with New York’s historic, current, and future ecological systems and initiatives that will enhance and protect the endangered resources in the area. The site itself contains a floodplain, tidal wetlands, freshwater wetlands, a natural artesian well, and acres of critical habitat. Our team worked with the client, various city agencies and a talented design team to protect and enhance the resources, while leveraging their value as integrated educational opportunities. Our design included innovative green infrastructure, water reuse, and low impact development techniques that meet state and city environmental regulations while creating a light touch on the land and an optimal user experience.
