In Lower Manhattan’s Battery Park, Sherwood is collaborating with a team of architects and landscape architects to create a signature play space in the last unused open space within the park. The Playscape project will increase the area of the children’s playground from 0.5-acre to 1.5-acres. This project incorporates storm surge resiliency, storm water runoff reduction, and adapting all the cultural and educational value of its surroundings.
Sherwood worked collaboratively to design and permit a landscape integrated stormwater management system that seamlessly blends into the parks features. Coordination with city agencies include, DPR, DEP, DOT, and MTA. This system will improve water quality through infiltration and reduce the amount of runoff directed to city’s combined sewer system. Sherwood took into consideration the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency recommendations to form a coastal barrier for the Lower Manhattan waterfront, and allow for the Playscape to function as a sponge filter from the surrounding urban runoff.
