India Basin Community Development is an innovative public/private/non-profit partnership that is designing a dynamic 27-acre mixed use community in San Francisco’s India Basin neighborhood that seeks to reimagine urbanism. This is envisioned as a diverse neighborhood, with housing, office space, and plentiful natural open space. The design team will innovate integrated systems of water, waste, energy, and mobility. Sherwood is designing a multi-faceted, integrated water management plan including on-site rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment and reuse, and sea level rise resiliency planning. Most recycled water will be treated on-site through a wastewater treatment facility. Limited municipal water will be purchased during summer months to fulfill the site’s water demand. In the winter, limited municipal sewer discharge will occur as the park’s irrigation demand is lower.
