In the context of national resource management, China has looked to its agricultural land as a place for conservation, innovation and sustainable development. Within this framework Sherwood Design Engineers has worked as master engineer with an international team of designers, led by Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill, to create a LEED Neighborhood Development (ND) for a sustainable agricultural community of 40,000 inhabitants near Shanghai. The infrastructure, restored natural systems, and economic development plan seek to maximize the productivity of the sustainable farming systems, employ the landscape to treat and manage the water, and create a new model of prosperity for the country. We designed 14-kilometers of restored waterways, engineered a 40-hectare constructed wetland for passive water treatment and developed the master grading and stormwater plans for the entire community.
